Outdoor Enthusiasts Find Winter Fun Across the Finger Lakes Despite Unpredictable Weather

Staff Report / December 12, 2025

Finger Lakes, NY — With winter conditions in the Finger Lakes remaining variable this season, local outdoor recreation experts are encouraging residents and visitors to take advantage of the region’s wide range of cold-weather activities. A new guide compiled by the Finger Lakes Land Trust highlights numerous ways to explore the area — whether there’s snow on the ground or not.

From scenic winter hikes to fat-tire biking, the guide recommends activities suited to a variety of interests and skill levels. Those who enjoy crisp air and striking landscapes can check out winter waterfall hikes at spots like Letchworth State Park, Taughannock Falls State Park, Keuka Outlet Trail, and Labrador Hollow Unique Area — though hikers are reminded that many gorge trails close for safety in the colder months.

Cross-country skiing remains a popular choice, with options ranging from technical terrain in state forests to more groomed paths at locations including Bear Swamp State Forest and Highland Forest. Animal tracking is another suggested pastime, offering a chance to spot wildlife tracks in the snow at areas such as High Tor Wildlife Management Area and Tanglewood Nature Center.

For cyclists undeterred by winter’s challenges, the guide points to fat biking opportunities at Shindagin Hollow State Forest, Green Lakes State Park, and Morgan Hill State Forest — where wide-tire bikes can handle snow and other difficult trail conditions.

The region’s extensive Finger Lakes Trail system, stretching hundreds of miles across New York, also offers noteworthy winter hiking through forests and nature preserves for adventurers looking to explore beyond the usual routes.

Officials urge outdoor lovers to check weather forecasts and trail conditions before setting out, and to respect seasonal closures and safety guidelines to ensure a rewarding winter outdoors in the Finger Lakes.
