Corning NY – Corning Community College has announced a major spring event for 2026’s Walter R. Smith Visiting Scholar Series featuring Pulitzer Prize–winning historian and bestselling author Doris Kearns Goodwin. The celebrated public speaker and presidential historian will present on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. in the Corning Museum of Glass Auditorium
Goodwin, widely recognized for her deep expertise on American leadership and presidential history, has authored numerous acclaimed books, many of which have become New York Times bestsellers. Her works combine rigorous historical research with engaging narrative, and several have shaped public understanding of iconic leaders such as Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Lyndon Johnson.
Among her most influential titles is Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, lauded for its portrayal of Lincoln’s leadership qualities and the cabinet he assembled — a work that later inspired Steven Spielberg’s film Lincoln. Goodwin’s distinguished career also includes producing historical documentary series for television and frequent appearances as an expert commentator across national media platforms.
Her most recent book, An Unfinished Love Story: A Personal History of the 1960s, became an instant New York Times bestseller in Spring 2024 and is in development as a feature film by Playtone and Eon Productions, highlighting both its cultural reach and continuing relevance.
Event Details and Access
The free event is open to the public, and attendees are encouraged to register in advance. Seating will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Following the lecture, a book signing will be held — giving community members the opportunity to meet Goodwin in person.
This lecture series brings distinguished thinkers and scholars to the Southern Tier, expanding educational and cultural opportunities beyond the Corning Community College campus. The event continues CCC’s tradition of offering high-impact academic programming that engages students, alumni, and the broader region.
