Guide Helps Locals and Visitors Make the Most of an Unpredictable Finger Lakes Winter

Finger Lakes Region, NY — Winter in the Finger Lakes can vary widely from one day to the next, but that doesn’t mean outdoor recreation has to take a back seat. A new region-wide guide published by Go Finger Lakes offers a range of suggestions for getting outside — no matter what the weather brings.

The guide highlights outdoor pursuits across the Finger Lakes that suit varying conditions, from snow-covered forests to crisp, clear winter days. Whether adventurers prefer cross-country skis or sturdy hiking boots, staff from the Finger Lakes Land Trust curated a list of activities that take advantage of the area’s scenic parks, nature preserves, rail trails, and forests.

Winter Hiking and Waterfall Views

For those who enjoy hiking, several spots offer breathtaking winter scenery, including frozen cascades and snowy landscapes. Recommended locations where hikers can admire winter waterfall views include Labrador Hollow Unique Area, Letchworth State Park, the Keuka Outlet Trail, and Taughannock Falls State Park.

Cross-Country Skiing and Snow Adventures

Cross-country skiing remains a top winter pastime throughout the region. Trails at Bear Swamp State Forest, Harriet Hollister Spencer Recreation Area, Highland Forest, and the Cumming Nature Center are noted for their variety and appeal to all skill levels.

Animal Tracking and Fat Biking

Winter’s snowy conditions provide a perfect backdrop for animal tracking. Enthusiasts can explore areas like High Tor Wildlife Management Area and Wesley Hill Nature Preserve to spot tracks and traces of wildlife activity. Meanwhile, “fat biking” — cycling with oversized, wide-tread tires — opens up snowy, muddy, or loose terrain for riders willing to embrace the chill, with popular spots including Shindagin Hollow State Forest and Green Lakes State Park.

Exploring the Finger Lakes Trail

The region’s extensive Finger Lakes Trail system also offers winter adventure opportunities. Stretching over 950 miles through forests and nature preserves, sections near Birdseye Hollow State Forest, Danby State Forest, and the Finger Lakes National Forest are especially recommended for winter hiking.

Plan Ahead

The guide emphasizes checking weather forecasts before heading out and encourages outdoor enthusiasts to dress appropriately and choose activities suited to current conditions.

With a variety of well-maintained trails and natural areas, the Finger Lakes remain a prime destination for winter recreation, whether locals are seeking solitude in nature or visitors are exploring the region’s outdoor offerings.
