Bath, N.Y. – A 42-year-old four-time convicted felon has been arrested and charged in connection with a violent domestic incident that left a woman seriously injured earlier this month in the Village of Bath.
According to the Village of Bath Police Department, officers and Bath Ambulance personnel responded to a residence on Geneva Street on January 13 following a report of an unknown medical alarm. Upon arrival, responders observed unusual activity inside the home and soon encountered a woman with severe wounds running from the residence seeking help.
Investigators determined the woman had been badly beaten and stabbed during what police described as a domestic dispute. The victim was treated for her injuries and is reported to be recovering.
Police located the suspect, identified as Dennis L. Smigiel, a 42-year-old Bath resident, and took him into custody at the scene. Smigiel was charged with Assault in the Second Degree and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree, both class D felonies, and additional charges are expected.
Smigiel was processed and transported to the Steuben County Jail for Centralized Arraignment Processing (CAP) and is being held without bail. Police noted that Smigiel’s status as a four-time convicted felon in New York State will be a factor as the case moves forward.
Authorities emphasized that the charges are accusations and that Smigiel is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
