Chimney Fire Heavily Damages Middlesex Home; Two Escape Safely

Staff Report / January 26, 2026

Middlesex NY – A rural home on Maxwell Road in the Town of Middlesex was heavily damaged Monday morning after a chimney fire broke out, prompting a multi-department response and several hours of firefighting efforts.

Deputies say the blaze began around 10:23 a.m. in the two-story, single-family residence at 841 Maxwell Road, where 21-year-old Chester H. Hoover and 21-year-old Marlene N. Hoover were inside at the time. Both occupants were able to evacuate safely, and no injuries were reported.

Investigators determined the fire originated in the home’s chimney connected to a wood stove, quickly spreading through the structure and causing extensive damage. Fire crews remained on the scene for several hours working to bring the fire under control and secure the property.

Fire departments from across the region responded to the incident, including units from Middlesex, Rushville, Potter, Benton, Branchport, Penn Yan, Crystal Beach, and Naples. Additional departments stood by to assist if needed.

Emergency services support was provided by Middlesex Ambulance and the Offices of Emergency Services from both Yates and Ontario counties. The ongoing investigation into the fire’s full cause is being handled by Deputy C. Hansen.

Officials have not released an estimate of the damage, but the structure is considered heavily compromised. Neighbors and community members expressed relief that the situation did not result in injuries, underscoring the importance of functioning heating systems and chimney maintenance during the winter months.
