Winter may be winding down, but outdoor enthusiasts in the Finger Lakes region still have plenty of scenic terrain to explore on snowshoes, according to a recent travel guide.
As March brings more snowstorms to the region, adventure seekers of all skill levels can take advantage of a variety of snowshoeing destinations chosen by the staff at the Finger Lakes Land Trust.
Among the suggested spots is the Connecticut Hill Wildlife Management Area, which offers two loop hikes — the 5.7-mile Van Lone Loop and the 2.6-mile Bob Cameron Loop — with forest roads and creekside views for snowshoers looking for a mix of landscapes.
Near Naples, the Cumming Nature Center gives visitors an easy and family-friendly snowshoeing experience. With a 3-mile loop and snowshoe rentals available for a small fee, it’s ideal for beginners or those without their own gear.
For more experienced adventurers, the Danby State Forest’s Abbott Loop trail traverses wooded glens and leads to a lookout at Thatcher’s Pinnacles, offering broad views of the Cayuga Inlet Valley.
Other notable locations include Highland Forest, with more than 20 miles of interconnected trails and on-site snowshoe rentals; Green Lakes State Park, where visitors can trek along fairways and open fields; and Oakley Corners State Forest, which features a 13-mile colored trail network suited to all ability levels.
The Roy H. Park Preserve, just outside Ithaca, connects into even larger trail systems like Hammond Hill State Forest, while organizations such as the Triple Cities Ski Club help maintain many of the public routes that wind through forests, meadows and wetlands.
No matter your experience, these snowshoe destinations provide a chance to enjoy winter’s beauty before the season ends in the Finger Lakes.
