The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office is offering local residents two opportunities this spring to complete New York State’s required boater safety training at no cost.
The Sheriff’s Office Navigation Division will host two free, one-day New York State Boater Safety Courses on Saturday, March 7, 2026, and Saturday, April 11, 2026. Both sessions will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Sheriff’s Office headquarters, located at 7007 Rumsey Street Extension in Bath.
The course is open to individuals at least 10 years old and is designed to educate participants on safe boating practices, navigation rules, emergency preparedness, and state regulations. At the conclusion of the class, attendees must pass a written exam to successfully complete the training.
While the class itself is free of charge, New York State requires a $10 fee for the official boater safety certificate. The certificate does not expire and is recognized statewide as proof of having met the boating safety requirement.
Seating is limited to 30 participants per session, and pre-registration is required. Those interested are encouraged to sign up early to secure a spot, as classes are expected to fill quickly ahead of the upcoming boating season.
