Update from New York State Governor Kathy Hochul

Governor Kathy Hochul / March 6, 2026

I’m doing my damndest to make New York safer and more affordable.

So when I see the Trump administration attacking New Yorkers’ rights, killing union jobs, and making life more expensive for small businesses, I can’t sit idly by.

New York is fighting back — and we’re winning.

For months, Donald Trump had been withholding funding for the Gateway Hudson Tunnel Project. In February, this illegal funding freeze forced the project to stop construction, putting 1,000 union workers out of a job and jeopardizing the entire northeastern economy. So, we took him to court and won. And when his Administration was slow-walking restoring funds, I got him on the phone. Two days later, the money was restored and our workers were able to get back on the job.

And when Trump imposed tariffs that were nothing but a backdoor tax on working families and small businesses, we took him to court once more. The Supreme Court ruled in our favor. Now, I’m demanding the Trump Administration return every penny of the $13.5 billion that New Yorkers are owed.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: If you come after New York workers, if you attack our economy, if you try to stall our future — we will hold you accountable.

The Latest From the Empire State

Letting New York build. New Rochelle has built thousands of new homes in the past five years, and we’re already seeing rents go down. When the Trump Administration threatened to derail their progress by withholding funding for a transformative project, we stepped in to help them stay on track. From breaking down roadblocks to cutting red tape, we’re going to keep fighting to help communities build the housing they need.

Record-low gun violence. Thanks to increased funding for local police, strong collaboration with communities, and investments in cutting-edge technology, gun violence is down 61% from 2021 and shootings and deaths are at historic lows. These results show our strategies are working, but we will never stop fighting to make our communities even safer.

Protect New Yorkers from Federal Overreach. We introduced the Local Cops, Local Crimes Act to ensure taxpayer-funded resources are used for protecting New Yorkers — not being exploited by ICE. It also bars federal agents from sensitive locations like hospitals, schools, homes, and houses without a warrant and holds them accountable if they violate your rights. Because we must pursue public safety lawfully, transparently, and with humanity.
