A Taste of the Finger Lakes: Spirits, Sweets, and Stellar Service at Montezuma Winery

Jim Moore / March 10, 2026

Nestled at the northern gateway of the Finger Lakes, where the scenic wetlands meet the burgeoning wine trail, sits a destination that offers a dual-threat experience for the modern palate. Montezuma Winery and Hidden Marsh Distillery, housed within the same rustic-chic facility in Seneca Falls, have become a cornerstone of the region’s craft beverage scene.

Whether you are a devoted oenophile or a spirits enthusiast, the Martin family’s expansive operation offers a masterclass in variety and hospitality.

The Martin Family Legacy

To understand the soul of Montezuma and Hidden Marsh, one must look to the parent company, Martin Family Wineries & Distilleries. With deep roots in the agricultural fabric of New York, the Martins have grown their passion for honey and fruit wines into a diverse empire that now includes multiple tasting rooms and an impressive portfolio of award-winning spirits. Their commitment to local sourcing and family-led innovation is evident from the moment you step through the doors of the Seneca Falls flagship.

A Masterclass in Hospitality: Meet Kyle

While the liquids in the glass are the primary draw, the experience is truly defined by the people behind the bar. During our recent visit, we had the pleasure of being hosted by Kyle, a young gentleman who is as much an educator as he is a server.

Kyle navigated our tasting with “charm by the mile,” striking that rare balance between professional expertise and approachable warmth. His knowledge of the fermentation process and the nuances of the Martin family’s history was extensive, ensuring that every sip came with a story. In a region where tasting rooms can sometimes feel like assembly lines, Kyle’s attentive and charismatic service made our visit feel like a private event.

The Tasting: From Bee to Barrel

The beauty of the dual-brand facility is the ability to pivot from crisp whites and fruit-forward wines to robust, aged spirits.

The Wines: Montezuma is perhaps best known for its pioneering work with Mead (honey wine) and fruit wines. Their traditional grape offerings are equally impressive, showcasing the bright acidity and mineral-forward profiles the Finger Lakes are famous for. Each pour felt intentional, well-balanced, and evocative of the local terroir.

The Spirits: Moving into the Hidden Marsh Distillery flight, things got even more interesting.

  • The Standout: The Bourbon was the undisputed star of the afternoon. Rich, smooth, and boasting a complex profile of caramel and toasted oak, it stands toe-to-toe with the best boutique distilleries in the country. It is a “must-try” (and likely a “must-buy”) for anyone visiting the distillery.
  • The Critique: While experimentation is at the heart of Hidden Marsh, not every expression hit the same high notes for us. The Corn Whisky was a bit of a departure; while technically sound, it carried a sharpness that lacked the refined finish of their other spirits, making it our least favorite of the flight.

The Verdict

Montezuma Winery and Hidden Marsh Distillery represent the best of what Seneca Falls has to offer: innovation, variety, and top-tier hospitality. Whether you’re stopping in for a bottle of their famous Cranberry Bog wine or sitting down for a bourbon flight with a pro like Kyle, you’re guaranteed an experience that captures the true spirit of the Finger Lakes.
