Dundee NY – A major infrastructure overhaul is officially underway in the Village of Dundee, as New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) crews have broken ground on a $5.5 million reconstruction of Route 14A.
The project, which targets a critical stretch of the highway through the heart of the village, is designed to enhance both motorist safety and pedestrian accessibility in this busy Finger Lakes corridor.
Enhancing Safety and Infrastructure
The multi-million dollar initiative focuses on a comprehensive “top-to-bottom” rehabilitation. Key features of the project include:
- Pavement Renewal: Extensive milling and resurfacing of Route 14A to address long-standing wear and tear and improve ride quality.
- Pedestrian Upgrades: The installation of new ADA-compliant sidewalks and curbing to ensure safer foot traffic for residents and visitors.
- Drainage Improvements: Significant upgrades to the village’s storm sewer systems to mitigate flooding and improve water runoff management.
- Traffic Signage: Updated signage and high-visibility pavement markings to improve navigational safety through the village center.
Minimizing Local Impact
State officials have indicated that while the project is a significant undertaking, efforts are being made to minimize the impact on local commerce. Route 14A is a vital artery for the region’s agricultural and tourism sectors, serving as a primary link between Watkins Glen and Penn Yan.
Work is expected to take place primarily during daylight hours. While the road will remain open to traffic, motorists should anticipate “alternating one-way” traffic patterns controlled by flaggers in active work zones. Commuters are encouraged to allow for extra travel time when passing through the village.
A Long-Term Investment
New York State DOT Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez highlighted the project as a vital investment in the Southern Tier’s infrastructure.
“Route 14A is a lifeline for the village of Dundee and the surrounding communities,” Dominguez said in a statement. “By modernizing this corridor, we are not only improving safety but also supporting the economic vitality of the Finger Lakes region for years to come.”
The project is slated for completion by the end of the current construction season, weather permitting. Residents are encouraged to monitor local travel advisories for real-time updates on lane closures and traffic shifts.
