Auburn NY – Two residents of Auburn, New York have pleaded guilty to felony animal cruelty charges following a prolonged case involving the abuse of a young dog, according to the Cayuga County District Attorney’s Office.
Prosecutors say the couple admitted to abusing a small mixed-breed puppy over a period spanning from late 2023 through early 2025. The animal, named Astella, was reportedly confined to a crate for approximately 15 months, resulting in severe physical injuries and permanent damage to its paws. Authorities said the prolonged confinement caused a serious medical condition and lasting disfigurement.
In addition to the felony charge of aggravated cruelty to animals, one of the defendants also pleaded guilty to multiple misdemeanor offenses, including failure to provide proper nourishment, animal abandonment, and causing harm to animals. Prosecutors said the puppy was left severely underweight due to a lack of adequate food and care.
The second defendant is expected to receive a sentence of five years of felony probation, while the other faces a possible prison term of up to two years when sentencing takes place later this year. Both individuals will also be required to register with the county’s animal abuser registry.
Officials noted that the case involved coordination between multiple agencies, including local police, an animal rescue organization, and a veterinary provider. The puppy was ultimately rescued, rehabilitated, and later adopted by a veterinarian involved in its care.
District Attorney officials emphasized the seriousness of animal cruelty offenses, stating that such acts involve deliberate harm to vulnerable animals and warrant stronger accountability under the law.
