Yates County Hosts DWI Victim Impact Panel Highlighting Consequences of Impaired Driving

Staff Report / May 5, 2026

Yates County officials recently hosted a victim impact panel aimed at confronting the real-life consequences of impaired driving, bringing together offenders, law enforcement, and community partners for a court-mandated educational session. The event was organized by the Yates County STOP-DWI Program and held April 22 at the county office building in Penn Yan.

According to organizers, 27 individuals were ordered by the courts to attend the panel, though seven failed to appear. Participants were screened and monitored by deputies and court personnel prior to the start of the session. Officials say the program is designed to meet court requirements for those charged with driving while intoxicated while also emphasizing accountability and awareness.

The panel included participation from a range of local stakeholders, including members of the county legislature, the district attorney’s office, probation staff, law enforcement, and substance abuse service providers. These representatives outlined available resources and support programs for individuals dealing with substance-related issues.

A central part of the event was a personal presentation from Michelle Curtin, who shared her experience of losing her mother in a head-on crash caused by a drunk driver. Curtin detailed the lasting emotional impact on her family and described her ongoing efforts to raise awareness about impaired driving through education and advocacy.

Officials emphasized that despite evolving marijuana laws, driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol remains illegal in New York. Attendees were required to complete an evaluation at the conclusion of the panel, with proof of attendance submitted to the courts as part of their case requirements.
