Seneca Sheriff Warns Local Businesses of Audacious Counterfeit Scam

Staff Report / July 17, 2026

WATERLOO — Law enforcement officials are sounding the alarm after a highly deceptive telephone scam began targeting local storefronts with the ultimate goal of orchestrating a physical cash grab. The Seneca County Sheriff’s Office issued an urgent public warning on Friday to alert regional business owners and their employees about fraudsters posing as members of the department to conduct fraudulent cash audits.

According to investigators, the sophisticated hustle begins when a scammer calls a local business, falsely claiming to be a sheriff’s office employee. The caller informs the worker that their establishment has been randomly selected for a currency audit due to a fictional spike in counterfeit bills circulating throughout the Finger Lakes region. After grilling the employee with a series of probing questions about the store’s finances, the impersonator states that a deputy is en route to inspect the cash on hand. The trap is sprung when the caller instructs the worker to gather the store’s money and walk out to a meeting spot behind the building for the supposed inspection.

Sheriff’s officials strictly emphasized that real deputies will never call a business to demand that cash be brought outside for an examination. To prevent local workers from falling victim to this bait-and-switch scheme, the department has issued a set of immediate safety protocols:

  • Lock Down Financial Details: If you receive a similar call, absolutely refuse to share any information regarding how much money is currently inside the building or stored in the registers.
  • Cut the Line Immediately: If the caller asserts that an agent or inspector is actively traveling to your location, write down the incoming phone number and hang up the phone without hesitation.
  • Emergency Deployment: Immediately after disconnecting from the fraudster, call 911 to report the active extortion attempt so real patrol units can intercept any potential suspects heading toward the property.
