Jane M Maier, age 96, a longtime resident of Williamsville, NY, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Aug. 11, 2025, at the Wellsville Manor Care Center in Wellsville, NY from natural causes.
Born July 26, 1929, in Buffalo, NY to Christian and Frieda (nee Schmid) Rentschler, Jane attended the State University of Buffalo and graduated with honors in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics Education. Jane worked in Springville, NY for a time, and later worked at Freddie’s Donuts in Buffalo where she met her husband, Ralph Maier. After getting married in 1952, her husband was sent overseas to serve during the Korean conflict. She and her husband were happily married for a remarkable 70 years before his passing in 2023.
After starting a family, Jane continued her education by earning her MS Ed. in Home Economics in 1963, graduating Summa Cum Laude. She then went on to receive a Master of Library Science in 1970, received permanent certification as a Library Media Specialist, and earned her Public Library’s Professional Certificate. She worked at Medaille College as a librarian until her retirement in 1978. After retiring, Jane was very involved in crafts through the Home Bureau, enjoying many different skills including knitting, crocheting, calligraphy, and quilting. She also greatly enjoyed gardening. Her garden was a testament to her love of flowers and was beautiful in every season. She always had a beautiful smile for everyone and will be deeply missed.
Jane is survived by two sons, Thomas (Stephanie) Maier of Williamsville, and William (Patricia) Maier of West Almond; six grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, her parents, and a son, Gary Maier, of Arkansas. No public memorial service or funeral is planned. If desired, donations can be made to the U.B. Anatomical Gift Program.
