Steuben County to Host New York Safe Boating Course on January 24

Staff Report / January 16, 2025

Bath NY – The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historical Preservation is partnering with the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office to offer a comprehensive New York Safe Boating Course on Saturday, January 24, 2026, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office in Bath.

The full-day program, held in the front conference room at 7007 Rumsey Street Ext, is designed to equip boaters and personal watercraft (PWC) operators with the foundational skills and knowledge necessary for safe and responsible operation on New York’s waterways.

Organized by the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office Navigation Patrol Unit and led by New York State certified instructors, the eight-hour class covers essential topics such as navigation rules (“rules of the road”), seamanship, safe loading and fueling procedures, and basic boat and motor operation.

Participants are encouraged to bring a bag lunch, snacks and drinks, as there is no refrigerator or microwave access on site. Vending machines for refreshments are available in the building lobby, and attendees should also bring a blue or black pen for paperwork.

The course meets New York State requirements for adult boating safety certification and personal watercraft operation. Those who successfully complete the class will earn a NY safe boating certificate. Students must be at least 10 years old by the date of the course to participate.

For individuals 18 years and older, there is a $10 fee for a permanent boating safety certificate, payable directly to New York State Parks; this fee is not required for participants under 18.

Registration is still open at the time of publication, with limited seats remaining for the class. Participants planning to attend are advised to secure their spot promptly, and those unable to attend should cancel their registration by Friday, January 23, to allow waitlisted participants a chance to participate.
