Steuben County Recognizes Lifesaving Team

“This is how a 911 system is supposed to work”

From Steuben County NY

Steuben County recently recognized the extraordinary efforts of first responders whose coordinated actions and unwavering professionalism in saving the life of Steuben County resident following a cardiac arrest on the morning of May 16, 2026.

During a recent Public Safety & Corrections Committee meeting, Steuben County Public Safety Director Timothy Marshall and EMS Coordinator Brandon Rosettie, presented commendations to the emergency responders whose seamless teamwork resulted in a remarkable outcome.

At approximately 3:26 a.m. on May 16, the Steuben County 911 Center received a report of an unconscious patient. Within moments, 911 telecommunicators recognized the severity of the emergency, dispatched the appropriate resources, and began providing lifesaving CPR instructions.

What followed was a demonstration of the strength of Steuben County’s emergency response system. From the initial 911 call through law enforcement response, emergency medical care, air medical transport, and hospital treatment, every link in the chain of survival worked together to give the best possible chance of recovery.

According to the American Heart Association, survival from an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest with full neurological recovery occurs in only approximately 4 to 9 percent of cases, making the patients recovery especially meaningful.

“This is how a 911 system is supposed to work,” said Steuben County Public Safety Director Timothy Marshall. “From the patients family member making that first call, to our 911 dispatchers providing CPR instructions, the responding police officers, EMS personnel, paramedics, LifeNet crew, and the hospital staff—everyone performed their role with incredible professionalism. It truly was a team effort that saved a life.”

Those recognized for their outstanding service include:

  • Steuben County EMS: Paramedic Jackie Lewis
  • Bath Police Department: Sgt. Dustin Johnson and Officer Michael Harrington
  • Steuben County 911 Communications: Brady Hill, Ashley Schwingel, Madeline Zanghi, Bobbi Shollenberger, and Nickole Hively
  • Bath Volunteer Ambulance Corps: Elizabeth Charland, Erinn Smith, Michael Fiordo, Michael Hann, Kendra Gay, and Aubrey Marsh
  • New York State Police: Trooper Trenten Merrill, Trooper Seth Maldonado
  • LifeNet 7-7: Ralph Wilcox and Rob Shaw

The incident stands as a powerful reminder that behind every emergency response is a network of highly trained professionals working together with one shared goal: saving lives. In this case, that commitment resulted in one of Steuben County’s own returning home to his family.
