Betty Morey, 75, Hornell

Betty J. Morey – 75 – of 7 William St., Hornell, passed away peacefully Friday afternoon, August 14, 2026, at her home, surrounded by family following a long illness.

Born May 22, 1951, in Hornell, Betty was the daughter of David and Gladys (Bowen) Baird.

A lifelong resident of Hornell, she was proud of her hometown and the many people and memories that made it home.  Betty was a graduate of Hornell High School, class of 1970.

On July 11, 1970, Betty married Francis “Dan” Morey, of Hornell, and they recently celebrated 56 wonderful years of marriage.

Throughout her working years, Betty was a familiar and hard-working presence in the community.

Betty was a former member of the Hornell VFW and the Hornell Association.  She will be remembered not only for her hard work, but for the warmth, creativity, and love she shared with those around her.  Betty found great joy in her kitchen.  She was a wonderful cook and an especially talented baker, with her homemade Christmas cookies being a favorite and much-anticipated tradition for her family and friends.  For Betty, cooking and baking were more than simply preparing food, they were ways of showing the people she loved just how much they meant to her.  Holidays were especially important to her, as she filled her kitchen with homemade treats and meals made with love for her loved ones.

She also had a wonderful creative side.  Betty enjoyed crocheting and lovingly made beautiful Afghans, baby blankets, doilies, many of which she happily gave to family and friends.  She enjoyed crafts, shopping, and loved taking casino trips, especially Salamanca.

Above all else, Betty cherished her family.  Her greatest happiness came from spending time with the people she loved, making sure they were cared for, well-fed, and surrounded by the warmth of a home filled with love.  Her kitchen, her homemade recipes, her crocheted gifts, and the countless little things she did for others will remain treasured memories for those who knew and loved her.

Betty leaves behind a lifetime of memories, traditions, and love that will continue to live on through her family and friends. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered for her generous heart, her loving spirit, and the many ways she made the people around her feel cared for.

She was preceded in death by her father, David; her sister, Cheryl Briggs, and nephew Jeff Ames.

Betty is survived by her husband Francis “Dan” Morey who survives.  Also surviving are her daughter, Michelle (Jason) Hunt of Cameron Mills, NY; 3 sisters, Bonnie (Randy) Morse of Canisteo, Cathy (David) Williams of Hornell and Deb (Tom Puleo) Baird of Hornell; her grandson, Brody (Sarah Buman) Hunt of Cameron Mills; 1 great-grandson, Brexton Hunt; along with several nieces & nephews.

At Betty’s request there will be no calling hours.  A “Celebration of Life” will be held on a date and time to be announced.

Funeral arrangements are in care of the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY.

Betty’s family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff at Meyers Cancer Center of Dansville, and CareFirst Hospice of Painted Post, for their loving care & support that they extended to Betty during her illness.  Their kindness will never be forgotten.
