Academic All-Star Championship: Addison and Alfred-Almond win respective divisions

STEUBEN COUNTY- A large, enthusiastic crowd was on hand at Bath-Haverling Monday night to take in the 40th Academic All-Stars championships. Of the sixteen teams that competed throughout the six-week season, the top four were honored with trophies for their respective divisions, and then faced off for the Large and Small School championship titles.

Team Alfred-Almond Champions

The first match of the evening was between Canaseraga, with coach Lacey Deiter, and Alfred-Almond, coached by Steve Donlon. The A teams began the contest with a close game, ending with Canaseraga holding a two-point lead. But the Alfred-Almond B team rallied to a 56 – 24 victory securing the title.

Competing for the Large School trophy were Hornell, under coach Morgan Allison, and Addison, led by coaches Sonya English and Samantha Havens. This was a close match all the way through, however Addison emerged with a 33 – 27 win to clinch the Large School Championship. Also presented was the Barb Fairbanks Service Award, recognizing a person for outstanding work with All-Stars.

Mary Harris was honored for her 14 years serving as Coordinator for the program.
