Steuben County reports a decline in overdose incidents in August, with a total of 19 cases.
The number of overdose incidents in Steuben County has decreased in August, according to the Steuben County Public Health Department. In August, 19 overdoses were reported, with Narcan used in six cases. Unfortunately, one fatality was recorded, bringing the total number of overdose-related deaths for the year to five.
While the exact causes varied, opioids were involved in one overdose, five were attributed to other substances, and 13 remained undetermined. This marks a significant drop from July, when 31 overdoses were reported. The county has been witnessing a downward trend in overdoses since the peak in May and June, aligning with state and national patterns.
Public Health Director Darlene Smith noted that the 2024 overdose numbers are currently lower than in 2023. This positive trend reflects the ongoing efforts of Steuben County and its partners to address the opioid crisis.
