Yates County Legislature Wraps Up Final 2024 Session with Key Resolutions

The Yates County Legislature closed out its December 9 session by addressing critical issues spanning infrastructure upgrades, tax rate finalizations, and enhancements to community services. These decisions set the stage for a productive start to 2025.

The Yates County Legislature closed out its December 9 session by addressing critical issues spanning infrastructure upgrades, tax rate finalizations, and enhancements to community services. These decisions set the stage for a productive start to 2025.

Infrastructure Enhancements

The legislature approved several measures to improve security and public infrastructure:

  • Access Control System Update: A $63,700 contract with Convergint was approved to enhance the county’s access control system with new door mechanisms.
  • Facility Project Adjustments: Contracts with the Building Innovation Group and Landry Mechanical were amended by approximately $11,000 each to accommodate changes in project scope for the Highway, Office of Emergency Services, and Public Health Facility Project.

Financial Resolutions

In preparation for the new year, legislators finalized key financial decisions:

  • Tax Rate Adoption: The 2025 Equalization and Apportionment Table was adopted, ensuring equitable tax levies across towns while maintaining funding for essential services.
  • Budget Transfers: Allocations were approved to support operational needs in departments such as the Sheriff’s Office, Public Defender’s Office, and Social Services.
  • School Tax Billing Program: A $500 contract renewal with GST BOCES was authorized to sustain the school tax billing system.

Public Health and Safety Initiatives

The session highlighted the county’s commitment to health and safety:

  • Employee Leave: An unpaid leave of absence was granted to a public health employee through December.
  • Child Safety and Addiction Services: Funding was secured to support a Child Passenger Safety grant and chemical dependency services at the county jail.
  • Agricultural Public Hearing: A hearing was scheduled for December 23 to discuss the inclusion of viable agricultural lands in the Yates County Agricultural District.

Special Acknowledgments

The legislature also took time to recognize milestones and community partnerships:

  • NYSAC Centennial: A resolution celebrated the 100th anniversary of the New York State Association of Counties (NYSAC) and its dedication to supporting county governments across the state.
