Emergency crews in Wayne County sprang into action early Friday morning after a car veered off Gansz Road in the Town of Galen, crashing into a partially frozen pond. The incident occurred around 7:42 a.m., prompting a swift response from multiple agencies.
Upon arriving at the scene, sheriff’s deputies discovered the vehicle sinking into icy waters, with the driver, 66-year-old John Valder of Junius, trapped inside. As water began to fill the car’s interior, deputies acted decisively, employing a safety throw rope to assist Valder in escaping the vehicle.
First responders from the Clyde Fire Department, New York State Police, and Wayne County EMS provided critical support, working together to pull Valder from the frigid water and bring him safely to shore.
According to authorities, Valder lost control of his northbound vehicle on Gansz Road, causing it to leave the roadway and plunge into the pond. He was evaluated on-site by Wayne County EMS and transported to Newark Wayne Community Hospital for further assessment as a precaution.
The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office praised the coordinated efforts of all responders involved, highlighting the teamwork that ensured a successful rescue. They also reminded drivers to exercise caution, particularly in winter conditions that can make roads hazardous.
