The Village of Bath has officially appointed Donald Lewis as its new Chief of Police, marking a significant transition in the department’s leadership. Lewis, a seasoned law enforcement professional with over 27 years of experience, brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to his new role.
Lewis began his law enforcement career in 1997 with the Canisteo Police Department. In 1998, he joined the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office as a full-time deputy sheriff. His dedication and skill led to his promotion in 2012 to Criminal Investigator and Assistant SWAT Commander, positions he held until his recent retirement to accept the chief’s position in Bath.
Throughout his career, Lewis has been recognized for his expertise in phone extractions and arson investigations. His leadership in numerous high-profile cases has earned him respect within the law enforcement community. Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard remarked, “He has done a lot for the Sheriff’s Department, and he will be missed.”
In his new role, Chief Lewis plans to prioritize community policing, aiming to foster strong relationships between the police department and both permanent and temporary residents of Bath. Mayor Mike Sweet has expressed support for this approach, highlighting the importance of integration and safety within the community.
The Bath Village Police Department currently comprises 10 full-time officers. Officials are optimistic that Lewis’s extensive experience and leadership skills will greatly benefit the department and the village as a whole. His appointment follows the retirement of former Chief Colin Taft in 2024.
As Chief Lewis steps into his new position, the community looks forward to the positive impact his leadership is expected to bring to Bath’s law enforcement and public safety initiatives.
