Before You Dive In: NY Officials Issue Crucial Survival Guide as Water Season Heats Up

Staff Report / June 29, 2026

ALBANY – As the final school bells ring and the mid-summer heat sets in, the shimmering waters of Seneca, Cayuga, and Keuka lakes are calling. However, New York State officials are issuing a timely reminder: paradise can turn perilous in the blink of an eye.

Coinciding with the official start of summer break, state agencies have launched a coordinated public safety campaign detailing essential water precautions. With regional emergency rooms historically seeing an uptick in water-related injuries during the warmer months, state parks have significantly expanded their preventative footprints—even partnering with the American Red Cross to double the number of public pools offering formalized swimming instruction this season.

“Staying alert, closely supervising children, following lifeguard instructions, and learning basic swimming skills can help ensure that every visit to the water is both safe and enjoyable,” state officials emphasized. Experts reiterate that while lifeguards provide an invaluable layer of protection, parental vigilance remains the ultimate defense against accidental drownings.

Before packing the beach bags and heading to our local state parks or backyard pools, families are urged to implement the state’s core safety directives:

  • Appoint a “Water Watcher”: Designate a responsible adult whose sole job is to monitor swimmers. This person must completely avoid distractions like texting, reading, or drinking alcohol. Statistics reveal that many drowning victims slip beneath the surface silently and are out of sight for five minutes or less.
  • Ditch the Water Wings: Never rely on inflatable “floaties” or foam armbands as life-saving devices. They provide a dangerous, false sense of security; only U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets should be trusted for weak or non-swimmers.
  • Rethink Swimsuit Colors: Visual clarity underwater can mean the difference between life and death. For traditional light-bottomed pools, neon pink and neon orange are the most visible, while neon green, orange, and yellow stand out best in dark-bottomed lakes.
  • Recognize Silent Distress: Forget the cinematic trope of thrashing arms and loud screaming. True drowning is often silent, characterized by a swimmer’s head low in the water with their mouth submerged, eyes closed or unfocused, and vertical legs making no forward progress.
  • Learn Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR): Gaps in adult supervision happen, but knowing how to properly administer CPR while waiting for emergency personnel can drastically alter the outcome of an underwater accident.

By taking these basic, intentional steps, Finger Lakes residents can ensure the upcoming season is remembered for its sun-soaked memories rather than preventable tragedies.
