Governor Kathy Hochul / July 3, 2026
This week, America will celebrate a milestone unlike any other: 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. And there is no better place to commemorate America’s founding than New York.
The Battle of Long Island. The Culper Spy Ring in Setauket. The first reading of the Declaration of Independence to the Continental Army. George Washington’s inauguration as our nation’s first President. It all happened here. New York was the center of the American Revolution and the birth of our democracy.
As we celebrate our history, we’re making sure every New Yorker has the opportunity to be part of this once-in-a-generation moment:
- My Conversation with Ken Burns: I sat down with acclaimed filmmaker Ken Burns to discuss his new documentary, The American Revolution and New York’s pivotal role in our founding.

- Experience Sail4th 250: From July 3rd through 9th, New York Harbor will welcome the largest fleet of tall ships and military vessels in the world. In a tradition dating back to the 1976 Bicentennial, ships from around the globe will sail into our harbor and salute the Statue of Liberty.
- Explore America 250 Events Across New York: From historic battlefields and museums to festivals, exhibits, and local commemorations, communities across our state are preparing events that will bring our shared history to life for visitors of all ages.
As we remember the past and New York’s role in the fight for independence, we must also remember those who have served our country ever since.
The freedoms we enjoy did not come easily. They were won through great struggle, at great cost, and preserved through the courage and sacrifice of countless Americans.
America 250 is about more than celebrating history, it’s about understanding our journey. Because we can only appreciate the value of our democracy by learning how we got it in the first place.
New York is critical to America’s founding story, and this summer we’ll show the nation why.
Ever Upward,
Gov. Kathy Hochul
