The eagle was transferred to the Erie County SPCA for treatment
From the Erie County SPCA,
Recently, a bald eagle was discovered in Angelica by the side of a road. She had a severe wing injury and was unable to fly. The NYS Department of Environmental Conservation brought the eagle to the SPCA’s Wildlife Department, and our veterinary team immediately began their assessment.
X-rays revealed that she had a fractured humerus, an open fracture so severe that the bone was protruding. In addition, two of her talons were damaged and had come off completely. While this sounds alarming, our wildlife veterinarians don’t think that this injury will inhibit her future ability to hunt.
What followed was an intense, high-stakes emergency. Our veterinarians performed pin surgery to stabilize the fractured wing, a delicate and precise procedure that went remarkably well. The eagle came through the surgery with incredible resilience!
Following her successful surgery, she was transferred to a specialized wildlife rehabilitator who provides intensive care for eagles. This rehabilitator is now overseeing her recovery, a process that will take several months before she can be considered for release back into the wild.
Just this week, our team had the privilege of seeing her again for a recheck. We were thrilled to report that her progress is excellent! They redid the splint on her wing, and she continues to heal beautifully! #SPCACompassionInAction
