Erwin, Steuben County, N.Y. — Emergency crews have successfully contained a nitrogen leak at the Corning Incorporated Diesel Plant, authorities reported Wednesday afternoon, restoring normal conditions after hours of response and precautionary measures.
The situation began early Wednesday morning when the Steuben County 911 Center received a call shortly after 7:15 a.m. reporting a nitrogen gas leak at the facility on State Route 417 in the Town of Erwin. Responders from the Forest View Gang Mills Fire Department observed a visible vapor cloud drifting across roadways near I-99 and Route 417, significantly reducing visibility and prompting immediate concern.
As a precaution, emergency officials evacuated residents in the immediate area and established an evacuation center at the Addison Community Center while shutting down affected roadways to protect public safety. Traffic was detoured around the scene during the response.
Plant personnel worked alongside emergency responders to locate and isolate the source of the leak. By late morning, authorities confirmed that the leak had been contained, there was no ongoing threat to the public, and the scene was cleared by emergency crews. Residents who had been evacuated were allowed to return to their homes, and traffic restrictions were lifted as conditions returned to normal.
Officials emphasized that continuous monitoring and cooperation between the plant and emergency services helped keep the incident under control. No injuries have been reported related to the leak. Authorities continue to review details of the event and will share further information as it becomes available.
