Dead birds discovered along Seneca Lake have tested positive for avian influenza, also known as bird flu, according to state environmental officials. Reports of deceased birds in the area prompted testing, which confirmed the presence of the virus in wildlife.
Local officials say there have been no reported cases of avian flu in Steuben County at this time. However, health officials are encouraging residents to remain cautious when encountering wildlife.
Steuben County Public Health spokesperson Malia Vandenberg advised residents to avoid touching sick or dead birds, keep pets away from wildlife, and wash hands after spending time outdoors. These precautions can help reduce potential exposure to the virus.
Avian influenza is commonly carried by migrating waterfowl and tends to appear more frequently during colder months when migratory birds travel through the region. While the virus can affect birds and other animals, health officials say the risk to humans remains low, especially when people avoid direct contact with infected wildlife.
Authorities continue to monitor bird activity in the Finger Lakes region and are asking residents to report clusters of dead birds to environmental officials.
