Staff Report / April 25, 2026
A Rochester man was rescued after falling into a steep gully at the High Tor Wildlife Management Area earlier this month, prompting a multi-agency emergency response.
According to officials, the incident occurred around 6:34 p.m. on April 10, when Ontario County 911 requested assistance from New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Forest Rangers.
Authorities say the 30-year-old hiker fell approximately 50 feet into a gully and was unable to climb out on his own due to the steep terrain.
Forest Ranger Lt. Miller responded to the scene and coordinated a technical rope rescue involving teams from Ontario and Yates counties. Crews worked to safely lift the hiker out of the gully under challenging conditions.
Once brought to safety, the individual was evaluated by emergency medical personnel at the scene. Officials have not released details regarding the extent of any injuries.
The rescue operation concluded at approximately 9:39 p.m., with all responding units clearing the scene later that evening.
Authorities note the incident highlights the risks associated with hiking in rugged areas, particularly in locations with steep drop-offs and limited access.
