Hantavirus: Ontario County Investigating Suspected Locally Acquired Case

Staff Report / May 18, 2026

Ontario County health officials are investigating a suspected locally acquired case of hantavirus, a rare rodent-borne illness that can cause severe respiratory symptoms in humans. Officials emphasized that the case is not connected to the recent international hantavirus outbreak linked to the MV Hondius cruise ship and said there is currently no risk to the general public.

According to Ontario County Public Health Director Kate Ott, the department issued a public statement due to increased public concern surrounding recent national and international media coverage of hantavirus cases. Health officials said infections remain extremely rare in New York State, with only a small number of cases reported since the disease became reportable in 1995.

Public health officials said hantavirus is typically spread through exposure to infected rodent droppings, urine, saliva, or nesting materials, particularly when particles become airborne during activities such as sweeping, vacuuming, or cleaning enclosed areas. Symptoms can range from mild flu-like illness to severe respiratory distress depending on the strain involved.

Officials stressed that the strain associated with the Ontario County investigation appears to be the North American form of hantavirus, which is not known to spread from person to person. That differs from the Andes virus strain involved in the MV Hondius cruise outbreak, which prompted international quarantine measures after several deaths were reported.

The suspected Ontario County case reportedly involves a student connected to the Geneva City School District, though school officials said there have been no additional cases among students or staff. Public health officials continue encouraging residents to use protective gloves and masks when cleaning areas where rodents may be present and to avoid stirring up dust in enclosed spaces.
