In a major boost for aviation infrastructure, New York Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand have secured $59 million in federal funding for 26 airports across the state. The funds, allocated through the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Improvement Program, will be used for various enhancement projects including terminal upgrades, taxiway repairs, and safety improvements.
“This significant investment will elevate airports statewide, improving safety and functionality,” Senator Schumer stated. Senator Gillibrand emphasized the importance of modern infrastructure for ensuring passenger safety.
Among the local beneficiaries are:
- Penn Yan Airport: Set to receive $1.58 million for expanding its taxiways to accommodate increased traffic.
- Ithaca Tompkins International Airport: Awarded over $2 million for a new Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Vehicle, $401,692 for taxiway upgrades, and $187,537 for enhanced runway signage and lighting.
- Frederick Douglass/Greater Rochester International Airport: Allocated $2.93 million for terminal renovations and $1.07 million for a new Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Vehicle.
- Cortland County/Chase Field Airport: Will get $419,482 for taxiway reconstruction.
These projects are expected to enhance airfield safety and capacity, supporting the growth of local economies and improving the overall travel experience for passengers.
