Finger Lakes Land Trust Preserves Offer Hunting-Free Zones

Finger Lakes Land Trust announces hunting-free zones at eleven nature preserves to ensure visitor safety and enjoyment.

The Finger Lakes Land Trust has announced that a number of its nature preserves will be off-limits to hunting during the upcoming fall and winter seasons. This decision is aimed at ensuring the safety and enjoyment of visitors to these popular outdoor destinations.

Bahar Nature Preserve (Niles, NY)

Bishop Nature Preserve (Fayette, NY)

Ellis Hollow Nature Preserve (Dryden, NY)

Etna Nature Preserve (Dryden, NY)

Otisco Nature Preserve (Spafford, NY)

Owasco Bluffs Nature Preserve (Niles, NY)

Sims-Jennings Preserve at Cayuga Cliffs (Lansing, NY)

Steege Hill Nature Preserve (Big Flats, NY)

Roy H. Park Preserve (Dryden, NY)

Thayer Nature Preserve (Ithaca, NY)
*Note, the Thayer Preserve entrance is to the left of the parking area on Townline Rd. The Sweedler Preserve, which allows hunting, is to the right of the parking area.

The land trust does issue a limited number of deer hunting permits for certain other preserves, but these areas are clearly marked with signs warning visitors of potential hunting activity. Public use policies for each preserve can be found on the land trust’s website.

Visitors to the Finger Lakes Land Trust preserves are encouraged to wear blaze orange, pink, or another bright color during the fall and winter months. This will help to make them more visible to hunters in the area.

For more information on hiker safety during hunting season, please visit the Finger Lakes Land Trust website.
