Keuka Lake Association Honors Shoreline Monitors for HAB Detection

The Keuka Lake Association recognized its dedicated volunteers who monitored harmful algal blooms on the lake throughout the summer.

The Keuka Lake Association (KLA) recently held a special event to recognize the dedicated volunteers who have been instrumental in monitoring harmful algal blooms (HABs) on Keuka Lake throughout the summer.

During the appreciation gathering at LyonSmith Brewing Co., approximately 30 shoreline monitors, guests, and other KLA members gathered to celebrate the significant contributions of these volunteers. The KLA organized the group in partnership with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to observe and track HABs in the lake.

“We have 63 volunteers monitoring 67 sites along Keuka Lake from June through October,” said Sue Oliver, vice president of the KLA and chair of the Water Quality Committee. “Their tireless efforts have been invaluable.”

Bob Lambert, chair of the HABs monitor program, echoed Oliver’s sentiments, emphasizing the volunteers’ crucial role in identifying the 15 HABs recorded on Keuka Lake this season. “Their dedication has helped keep our community informed about the potential hazards posed by these blooms,” he said.

HABs can be a significant concern in freshwater lakes, especially during the warmer months. The volunteers’ monitoring activities have played a vital role in raising awareness about the presence of HABs and the risks they can pose to both human and environmental health. Learn more about HABs
