Blue-Green Algae Closes Penn Yan Swim Areas

Staff Report / July 29, 2025

The New York State Department of Health has closed the swim areas at Red Jacket and Indian Pine Parks in Penn Yan following the detection of a harmful algal bloom, also known as blue-green algae.

Officials warn that contact with the algae can cause skin and eye irritation, while ingesting the water may result in nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. The algae can give the water a green appearance or create thick scums on the surface.

While swimming is prohibited until further notice, other park facilities, including playgrounds, pavilions, and picnic areas, remain open. The Department of Health advises residents to avoid swimming, wading, or fishing near visible algae, keep children and pets away from the water, and rinse thoroughly if exposed. Symptoms should be reported to the department at (315) 789-3030. The swim areas will reopen once conditions are safe.
