Construction begins July 7, expected to finish by summer 2026
Staff Report / July 7, 2025
A major safety project is set to begin at Watkins Glen State Park as the iconic Sentry Bridge closes for reconstruction on Monday, July 7. Originally constructed in 1908, the stone arch bridge will be replaced with a modern stainless steel design after structural concerns prompted state officials to take action.
In 2021, inspectors discovered movement beneath the bridge’s southern abutment. A temporary structure was installed in 2022, but long-term plans were developed to fully address the issue. The new $7.5 million replacement will retain the bridge’s distinctive arch while anchoring it to more secure ground. The project, funded through NY Works, is expected to be completed in time for the Fourth of July weekend in 2026.
While portions of the Gorge Trail near the bridge will be closed during construction, Watkins Glen State Park will remain open with shuttle service, the swimming pool, and gift shop available to visitors. Officials encourage the public to check the NY State Parks website for updates.
